The Devil Ball can help you putt straighter by overexaggerating the feedback from your putter face. By training your putter stroke with this ball, you’ll improve one of the key factors to making putts from anywhere on the green.

How the Devil Ball Works

Due to the round shape of a typical golf ball, putts where the clubface is slightly open or closed only move slightly off the intended path. This can make it tough to know if your aim was bad or if you mishit the putt. The Devil Ball lets you train face angle by adding a flat side to the ball.

When hitting the flat side of the Devil Ball, a closed face will make the ball roll hard left in an awkward fashion, and an open face will do the same to the right. Only a perfect putt will roll end over end straight toward the target.

The ball has three different positions in which it can be placed:

  • Pro – hitting directly on the flat portion of the ball will ensure your face direction is perfect
  • Intermediate – rotated slightly forward for an impact point that is between curved and straight
  • Beginner – curved like a normal ball, however a mishit will still be more obvious than a totally round golf ball

How to Train with the Devil Ball

I found the devil ball on my quest to improve my putting. It was the worst part of my strokes gained scores on Arccos, and I noticed I mostly two-putted holes, but almost never got a one-putt. I changed a number of things about my putting to improve it, but the key thing was figuring out how to make sure I was rolling along my target line.

The devil ball works on any surface because it reacts so strongly to a putt that isn’t perfectly straight. You can putt on the carpet or a putting mat, or you can bring it out to a practice green.

I tried putting in all the various difficulty setups, but the pro (square surface) setup was the most useful for me. It gives the most feedback as long as you’re able to overcome the frustration of not getting it perfect right away.

Keep in mind that any improvement is going to help. If you’re only getting slightly off, you’ll still make more short putts, and as you continue to improve, you’ll be able to make longer putts.

As you attempt to hit it perfectly, here are some things you can tweak to see if it helps your face control:

  • Adjust ball placement center, forward, or back in your stance
  • Stand closer or further from the ball
  • Adjust your grip by turning your hands or trying different grip styles
  • Try to use only your shoulders to rock, and don’t use your hands to manipulate the putter as much
  • Take your thumbs off the putter to decrease how much your hands manipulate the face

After improving my putting with this, I’m much more confident on the greens. I go back to hitting a few of these every time I practice putting to make sure I’m still on track or if I need to make any adjustments.

Conclusion

Pros

  • Provides feedback on putter face direction
  • One of the most useful putting training tools I’ve found

Cons

  • Slightly expensive, but will last basically forever
