With Stableford, each score you make on a hole gives you points. This means one really bad hole doesn’t ruin your whole round. I like how it keeps the game moving and lets me take more chances on the course.
How Stableford Scoring Works
Point System Explained
In Stableford, you earn points for each hole based on how many strokes you use compared to the hole’s par.
Here’s a simple table that shows the typical point breakdown:

Understanding Net and Gross Scores
A gross score is just the total number of strokes you take. Your net score is my gross score minus your handicap.
Most Stableford games use net score assuming everyone has a handicap and are at different skill levels. Simply calculate your adjusted score for each hole (you can use the course handicap calculator), then look up the points you earned.
Stableford vs Traditional Stroke Play
Traditional stroke play adds up all my strokes for every hole. The lower my total, the better. In Stableford, I’m only trying to get high points on each hole instead of counting every shot.
One big plus of Stableford is that one bad hole won’t ruin my whole round. I just get zero points for that hole, but my score can bounce back fast on the next.
Games move faster because players don’t have to finish every hole if they can’t earn any points. This format feels more relaxed, and you can take more risks on tough holes knowing a mistake won’t set you back as much.
Stableford Formats and Variations
Stableford comes in a few different styles. Some have special scoring rules, while others let teams work together to earn points.
Modified Stableford
Modified Stableford changes the points you get for each hole. Instead of just rewarding better scores, it gives bonus points for birdies and eagles and may even give negative points for bad holes like double bogeys.

Team Stableford
In Team Stableford, players join up and play for a group score. Each person records their individual Stableford points, and the team total is added up for each round.
Some events use the best two scores of four players, while others add everyone’s points together. This scoring lets teammates pick each other up if someone has a rough hole.
Teams can choose their own strategies. One person may play it safe, while another goes for risky shots to chase points. This makes it fun and a bit more relaxed compared to stroke play.
Strategies for Playing Stableford
Stableford scoring can really change how you think about each shot on the golf course. The key is making smart choices that match the way points work, not just the way you’d play in regular stroke play.
Aggressive vs. Conservative Play
In Stableford, a bad score isn’t punished so it’s a good idea to focus first on playing smart golf, but if you get in a spot where you have a tricky shot in the woods or over water and its unlikely you’ll get points by playing safe, you can go for it. It’s one of the few times this strategy makes sense in golf.
If you’re only counting the best two of four scores on your team, there will be opportunities where you see a teammate is doing well and you can play more aggressively. If all the players on your team are relatively consistent, you can also pick a player who will play riskier on the hole in hopes of shooting a lower score.
Big rewards come from birdies and eagles in Stableford. But I always remember: it’s better to get some points than to walk away with nothing.
